Okay, so I’ve been thinking about getting a pet, and not just any pet, but something a bit different, you know? That’s when I stumbled upon the idea of getting an African Grey parrot. I mean, who wouldn’t want a talking bird, right?
So, the first thing I did was to see where I could actually buy one of these guys. I started by checking out a few online stores that mentioned having African Grey parrots for sale. A lot of them had pictures of these beautiful birds, and some even had videos. I found a few places that talked about hand-raised ones, which seemed like a good idea since I want a bird that’s already used to people.

- Then there was Friendly Exotic Pets, which also had young and, apparently, well-trained birds. Sounded promising, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t rushing into anything.
I did some more digging and found out that these birds are actually pretty protected. They’re listed in something called CITES Appendix I, which I learned is all about protecting endangered species. Apparently, you can’t just buy and sell them like any other pet. There are rules and, in some cases, it’s totally restricted. There are some pretty specific rules to follow if you want to buy or sell them. It all felt a bit overwhelming, to be honest.
I kept reading up on them because, despite the complicated stuff, I was still interested. These birds are supposed to be super smart and can even mimic human speech. I thought about how cool it would be to have a bird that could actually talk back to me. I was imagining all the fun conversations we could have. I was seriously thinking about how cool it would be to have a bird buddy.
Money Stuff
Of course, I had to think about the cost. Turns out, these birds can be pretty pricey, ranging from $500 to $4,000! And that’s just to buy the bird. I realized there’s a whole lot more to it, like food, a big cage, toys, and vet visits. And it’s not just about the money; these birds can live for a really long time, so it’s a huge commitment. I also learned that they need a lot of attention and care, so it’s not something to take lightly.
So, that’s where I am now. Still thinking about it, weighing the pros and cons. It’s a big decision, but the idea of having an African Grey is still really appealing to me. Also, I realized that it was because they are rare and exotic, which meant breeders might need special licenses and stuff. It’s a lot to consider, but hey, it’s all part of the adventure, right?
