Alright, so, I’ve been thinking about getting an African Grey parrot for a while now, right? I mean, they’re just so cool with all that talking they do. So, I finally decided, “Let’s do this!”

First thing I did was hit up the internet to see where I could find one near me. I typed in “African Grey for sale near me” and, boom, a bunch of results popped up. There were a few places in South Africa that came up a lot, especially in Gauteng. Sounded like that was the hotspot for these birds. I figured it’d be good to check out places with a decent selection, so I could maybe find one that I really clicked with.
I saw some websites talking about breeders and sellers, and they had all these pictures of these beautiful birds. Man, they looked amazing. Some of them even had videos of the parrots talking and playing. I was hooked! I started looking through all the different listings and reading up on what kind of care they needed. Learned that they need a lot of space, a good diet, and tons of attention.
Then I started checking out the prices. These birds aren’t cheap, I’ll tell you that much. They can go from like $500 to $4,000, depending on their age and stuff. But, you know what? I was ready to make the investment. I also found out that the initial cost is just the beginning. These birds are native to west and central Africa, they live in forests and woodlands. And, there’s food, toys, vet bills, and all that jazz.
I also read about some other types of parrots that are good for beginners, like the Pionus or Quaker parrots. But honestly, my heart was set on an African Grey. I just loved the idea of having a bird that could really talk and interact with me. I’ve even heard that if you have one African Grey, they can get along with another one over time, so maybe I’ll get a second one down the road. Oh, and I also found out that Cockatiels are also a good choice, they are also quick to learn & like to whistle.
Anyway, after doing all this research, I narrowed down my options to a few places in Gauteng. I contacted one of them using a form on their website, and they got back to me pretty quick. We chatted a bit about what I was looking for and what kind of birds they had available. They seemed to know their stuff, so that was good.
Finally, I made the trip out there to see the parrots in person. I got to meet a few of them, and one just really stood out to me. He was so playful and curious, and he even started mimicking some of the words I was saying. That was it for me. I knew he was the one.
So, I went through with the purchase, and now I’m the proud owner of a beautiful African Grey parrot. It’s been a journey, but totally worth it. He’s already bringing so much joy to my life, and I can’t wait to see what our future together holds. He is already whistling, which is a good sign.
