Alright, so I’ve been thinking about getting a bird for a while now, and I’ve always been fascinated by African Greys. They’re smart, they can talk, and they’re just beautiful birds. So, I decided to look into getting one here in Michigan. First, I did a deep research, I searched “african gray for sale in michigan” on the Internet, I found that a lot of websites show there are African Grey Parrot Birds for sale in Detroit.

I started by checking out local pet stores. I figured that’d be the easiest place to start. I visited a couple of them, asked around, but no luck. Nobody seemed to have any African Greys. Then I thought, maybe I need to go to the breeders directly, I’ve heard that is a great choice.
So I started looking up breeders in Michigan. I found a few online that seemed reputable, you know, with good reviews and all. I called them up, asked about their birds, their breeding practices, and all that. One of them in Detroit caught my attention. The breeder seemed really knowledgeable and passionate about the birds. They had a couple of Congo African Greys available. Perfect!
I decided to go visit the breeder. When I got there, I was pretty impressed. The place was clean, the birds looked healthy and happy. The breeder showed me around, told me about each bird’s personality, and how they were raised. It was clear they really cared about these birds and wanted them to go to good homes.
Then came the hard part – picking one out! They were all so cute and unique. I spent some time with each of them, trying to see which one I connected with the most. Finally, I found my match. A playful, curious little guy who seemed just as interested in me as I was in him.
Preparation
- Cage: Before I brought him home, I made sure I had everything set up. I got him a big cage, plenty of room to move around and play.
- Toys and Perches: I filled it with toys, perches, you name it. I wanted him to be stimulated and comfortable.
- Food and Water: And of course, I got him the best food and fresh water.
- Time: I read that African Grey parrots require an hour or more each day of enrichment playtime with owners involving games, puzzles and lessons, and they also require 2-3 hours of exercise and out-of-cage time every day to help build muscle strength and prevent obesity.
- Money: I also learned that the African Grey Parrot’s price ranges from $500 to $4000, I need to prepare enough money for it.
Bringing him home was exciting. It took him a little while to adjust, but soon enough, he was exploring his new home, chirping away. We started bonding right away. I’d talk to him, play with him, and just spend time near his cage. He’s still a bit shy, but he’s warming up to me more and more each day. These days, he can imitate the sound of the phone and even say “Hello”. I know that they are extremely neurotic and prone to anxiety and need an extremely stable routine and an absurd amount of daily interaction. I will be patient with my new friend.
It’s been a journey, for sure, but I’m so glad I decided to get an African Grey. He’s already brought so much joy into my life. If you’re thinking about getting one, I definitely recommend doing your research, finding a good breeder, and being prepared to give them the love and attention they need. They’re amazing birds, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me and my new feathered friend.
