Okay, so, I wanted to make something special for my dog, Buddy. He’s a good boy, and I thought, why not make him a superhero cape? Yeah, a cape for a dog! I figured it would be a fun little project.

First, I needed a shirt collar, one that fit Buddy’s neck. It was an old button-up shirt of mine that I didn’t wear anymore. Perfect size. I also grabbed some fabric. I chose a bright red flannel because, you know, superheroes and red capes just go together, also, pinks which my little princess would like. I also made sure I had my sewing machine ready and a hot glue gun, just in case.
I started by cutting the collar off the shirt. This was going to be the part that goes around Buddy’s neck. Then, I laid out the red flannel and cut it into a cape shape. I didn’t use a pattern or anything, just eyeballed it. It’s not rocket science, right? I wanted it to be long enough to look cool but not so long that Buddy would trip over it.
- Cut the collar from the shirt.
- Cut the fabric into a cape shape.
- Attach the cape to the collar.
Next, I sewed the cape onto the collar. I used the sewing machine for this because I wanted it to be sturdy. Buddy can be a bit of a goofball, and I didn’t want the cape to fall apart the first time he ran around with it. I made a few passes back and forth with the machine to make sure the stitching was strong.
After the sewing was done, I tried the cape on Buddy. It fit perfectly! He looked so cute, like a little superhero. I added a little “S” for “Super Buddy” on the cape using the hot glue gun and some yellow felt I had lying around. It was a nice touch, I think.

Buddy seemed to like his new cape. He ran around the house with it, and it was flapping in the wind like a real superhero. It was a simple project, didn’t take much time, and it was a lot of fun. Plus, Buddy now has a cool new accessory. He stands out from other dogs. If your dog refuses to wear anything, maybe try a cape! Anyway, I might make more of these. Maybe a blue one next time, or even one with some patterns. Who knows? The possibilities are endless!
