Okay, so, I got this idea to make a foam hammer, you know, like those toy ones kids play with? I saw some stuff online about them being, like, 14 inches long and made of some kind of PU foam. There were a bunch of them going for around 25 to 30 bucks. Seemed a bit pricey for a toy, so I thought, “Why not try making one myself?”

First, I went digging around for materials. I needed something soft and squishy but also sturdy enough to hold its shape. I found this foam stuff, kind of like what they use for packing? It was perfect. I also grabbed some wooden dowels from my garage – I knew they’d come in handy someday.
Next, I got to work. I started by cutting the foam into a big rectangle, this was going to be the hammerhead. It wasn’t perfect, but hey, it’s a toy, right? Then I had to figure out how to attach the handle. I took one of those wooden dowels and sharpened one end a bit with a knife – carefully, of course, don’t want any accidents.
Here’s the tricky part: I had to shove the pointy end of the dowel into the foam rectangle. It took some wiggling and pushing, but I managed to get it in there about halfway. To make sure it wouldn’t come loose, I used a bunch of that strong glue – the one that smells really bad. I let it dry for a whole day, just to be safe.
After the glue was all dried, I took some scissors and started shaping the foam. I trimmed the edges to make it look more like a real hammerhead, you know, with those rounded corners and stuff. It wasn’t super precise, but it definitely looked like a hammer.
- Gathered foam and a wooden dowel.
- Cut the foam into a rectangle for the hammerhead.
- Sharpened one end of the dowel.
- Inserted the dowel into the foam.
- Glued it all together and let it dry.
- Shaped the foam to look more like a hammer.
Steps I took:
The last step was to make it look cool. I had some leftover paint from another project, so I painted the handle a dark brown, like a real hammer. For the head, I went with a bright red, because why not? It’s a toy, after all, it should be fun!
It took me a couple of days, mostly waiting for the glue and paint to dry, but in the end, I had my very own homemade foam hammer. It’s not perfect, a bit wonky in places, but it’s mine, and it works! My kid loves it, and honestly, I had a blast making it. Plus, it cost me way less than those 25-dollar ones online.
So, yeah, that’s my story about making a foam hammer. It was a fun little project, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for something to do with your hands. Just be careful with the sharp stuff and the smelly glue, okay?
