Alright, let’s talk about them window cat litter boxes, or whatever ya call ’em. You know, the thingamajigs where the cats do their business. I seen a whole bunch of ’em, and let me tell ya, some are good, some are bad, and some are just plain ugly. But what matters most is if the darn thing works, right? And if the cat likes it, well, that’s a bonus.

First off, you gotta think about the size. If you got a big ol’ cat, like one of them Maine Coons or somethin’, you gonna need a big box. Don’t go gettin’ one of them tiny things, the poor cat won’t be able to turn around! It’s like tryin’ to fit a watermelon in a teacup, it just ain’t gonna work. And if you got a little bitty kitty, well, you don’t need a giant one, but make sure it ain’t too tall for the little fella to climb into. Get a box that’s the right size, that’s what I say.
Now, about them high sides. Some folks like ’em, some don’t. Me? I think they’re a pretty good idea, especially if you got a cat that likes to kick the litter all over the place. You know the type, they go in there and act like they’re diggin’ for gold, and next thing you know, you got litter everywhere! The high sides help keep that mess in the box, which is a blessin’, let me tell ya. I seen one of them boxes, had sides like a darn fortress! Kept all that mess right where it belonged.
- Keeps the litter inside
- Good for messy cats
But then you gotta think about cleanin’ the thing. Some of them boxes, they got all sorts of nooks and crannies, and it’s a pain in the neck to clean ’em out. You gotta get in there with a scoop and a brush, and sometimes you still can’t get all the gunk out. I like the ones that are smooth and simple, easy to wipe down. And if it’s got one of them liners, well, that’s even better. Just pull it out, toss it, and put in a new one. Easy peasy. A clean box is a happy box, and a happy box means a happy cat, and a happy cat means a happy you. That’s just common sense, ain’t it?
And what about the material? I seen ’em made outta plastic, metal, even some fancy ceramic ones. Plastic is probably the most common, and it’s usually pretty cheap. But sometimes it gets all scratched up and stinky, and then you gotta throw it out. Metal ones are tougher, but they can get cold in the winter, and nobody wants a cold butt, not even a cat. Ceramic ones look nice, but they can break if you drop ’em. So, you gotta pick what works best for you and your cat.
Then there’s them self-cleaning ones. Now, them’s a whole ‘nother story. They sound fancy, right? Like somethin’ out of a science fiction movie. But let me tell ya, they can be a pain in the butt too. They got motors and wires and all sorts of things that can break. And sometimes they don’t even clean that good. I heard tell of one that got stuck halfway through a cycle and the poor cat had to go in a dirty box. Now that ain’t right. Give me a good ol’ fashioned scoop and a sturdy box any day.
Another thing to think about is where you’re gonna put the box. Some folks put ’em in the bathroom, some in the laundry room, some even in the livin’ room! But wherever you put it, make sure it’s easy for the cat to get to, and make sure it’s out of the way so you don’t trip over it. And for the love of Pete, don’t put it near their food or water. Nobody wants to eat where they do their business, not even a cat.
And speaking of windows, I guess that’s why they call it a window cat litter box, right? Putting it by a window ain’t a bad idea. Cats like to look outside, and maybe it gives them somethin’ to do while they’re doin’ their business. But make sure it ain’t too drafty in the winter, or your cat might get cold. And make sure it ain’t in direct sunlight all day, ‘cause that litter can get hot as blazes, and nobody wants a hot box.
So, there you have it. My two cents on window cat litter boxes. Just remember, get a box that’s the right size, easy to clean, and in a good spot. And if your cat likes it, well, that’s all that matters. After all, they’re the ones usin’ it, not us. Though sometimes I wish I could just go in a box and someone would clean it up for me. Life would be a whole lot easier, wouldn’t it?
