I’m a creature of habit, I’ll admit. For years, my golden retriever, Buddy, has been on the same dog food – Chicken Soup for the Soul. It’s a brand I trusted, a brand that felt good. You know, the name itself just sounds wholesome. But a few days ago, I saw something that made my stomach drop: a recall notice.

My first reaction was panic. I rushed to check the bag in the pantry, my heart pounding. Was it the same batch? Did I accidentally feed Buddy something that could make him sick? Luckily, after frantically cross-referencing the lot numbers online, it seemed we were in the clear. But the whole thing was a wake-up call. I felt like I was in trouble.
I started digging. Apparently, Diamond Pet Foods, the company that makes Chicken Soup for the Soul dog food, had to recall some batches of their Adult Light Formula. The issue? Salmonella. Now, Buddy eats the regular adult formula, not the light one, but still. The thought of salmonella in any pet food is enough to make you feel really sick.
It turns out this wasn’t the first time, either. Back in 2012, there was another Chicken Soup for the Soul recall, also because of salmonella. That’s when I realized I had to be more careful, more aware.
This whole thing really got me thinking about how much we trust these brands, right? We see the cute pictures of dogs on the bags, the promises of quality ingredients, and we just assume it’s all good. But these recalls are a harsh reminder that we need to be diligent, we need to stay informed.
So, what did I do? First, I signed up for some recall alert emails. There are a couple of websites that track this stuff, and now I get a notification anytime there’s a problem with any dog food brand. I also found a great article with a lot of frequently asked questions about pet food recall, and I learned a lot from it.
I’m not switching Buddy’s food just yet. Like I said, our batch was safe, and he’s been doing well on Chicken Soup for the Soul. But I’m definitely going to be paying closer attention from now on. I’ll be checking the lot numbers religiously, staying up-to-date on any news, and probably doing a bit more research into other brands, just in case.
It’s a scary thing, realizing that something you thought was safe for your furry friend might not be. But this whole experience has made me a more informed, more responsible pet owner. And that’s a good thing, even if it came from a bit of a scare.
- Lesson learned: Don’t blindly trust, always verify.
- Action taken: Signed up for recall alerts and researched more about pet food safety.
- Next steps: Continue to monitor closely and consider other options.
Hope this helps some of you out there. Stay safe, and give your pups an extra hug for me!
