Think about where the sun hits in your yard and put the kennel in a good place.
Building a DIY kennel? Well, you gotta plan it out. Measure twice, cut once, that’s what my old man always said. You’ll need posts, and wire, and a gate. And some way to keep it all together. Nails, screws, that kinda thing. Make sure it’s sturdy, you don’t want it falling apart on your dog. And make sure there ain’t no sharp edges or anything that could hurt him.
What if you don’t have a kennel? Well, I guess you could use a playpen, one of those things for babies. Or maybe some of them baby gates, make a little area for your dog. Just make sure he’s got plenty of air, especially if it’s hot. And it ain’t a forever kinda thing, you know. Dogs need space to run around.
And where ya gonna put this kennel? Don’t put it where the water puddles up when it rains. Dogs don’t like wet feet, no more’n you do. Find a spot that’s high and dry, maybe with a little shade already there. Trees are good for shade. But make sure there ain’t no branches hangin’ down where your dog can reach ’em. They’ll chew on anything, dogs will.
Bigger kennels, are they better? Well, sometimes. If you got a lot of dogs, or really big dogs, then yeah, a bigger kennel is better. I heard tell of folks with kennels as big as 20 x 20 or even 30 x 30 feet! That’s practically a whole yard for your dog. But if you just got one or two regular-sized dogs, a 12 x 12 is probably just fine. No need to go overboard.
