Alright, guys, let’s talk about something I tried out recently with my pup – beef femur bones. Yeah, you heard that right, big ol’ bones!

So, I went to the local butcher the other day, my dog, Buddy, is always looking for something to chew on, and I figured I’d give him a real treat. I asked for a beef femur bone, and the butcher gave me this massive thing. I mean, it was almost as big as Buddy’s head! He seemed pretty excited, wagging his tail like crazy as I carried it home.
The Prep Work
Now, I didn’t just give it to him straight away. First, I wanted to make sure it was safe. I did some reading, and it turns out you gotta be a bit careful with these things. Some folks online said raw bones are better than cooked ones because they don’t splinter as easily. So, I decided to go with that, even though it felt a little weird giving him a raw bone.
- Sourced a big beef femur bone from the butcher.
- Decided to keep it raw based on some online advice.
Buddy’s Reaction
I took Buddy out to the backyard and presented him with the bone. His eyes lit up! He grabbed it and started gnawing on it like he hadn’t eaten in days. Seriously, he was in heaven. I watched him for a while, making sure he wasn’t breaking off any big pieces. He mostly just scraped at it, getting the marrow and cartilage. And boy, did he go to town on that marrow! I guess you can say this is a natural behavior for dogs.
Cleaning Up
After about an hour, I took the bone away, much to Buddy’s disappointment. It was getting pretty messy, and I didn’t want him to eat too much of it in one sitting. I wrapped it up and put it in the fridge. I read somewhere that you can give these to your dog a few times, as long as you store them properly. It can also help clean their teeth and strength their jaw.
The Verdict
So far, so good. Buddy seems to love it, and it definitely keeps him occupied. I think I’ll keep doing this, maybe once or twice a week. It’s a good way to give him a treat and let him indulge in his natural chewing instincts. Plus, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than those fancy dog chews at the pet store!
Anyway, that’s my experience with beef femur bones. If you’re thinking about trying it with your dog, just do your research and keep an eye on them while they’re chewing. And maybe don’t give it to them on the carpet!
Stay tuned, folks!
