Alright, so the other day I was thinking, “My pup deserves a treat, but what’s both tasty and healthy?” Then it hit me – why not make some homemade fruit chews? I mean, I love those gummy snacks, so maybe my dog would too, right? So I started looking into it, and it turns out it’s a thing!

First off, I did a bit of reading. Turns out, regular fruit snacks are a no-go for dogs. Too much sugar and some of those artificial sweeteners can be really bad for them. I even read that too much of these can be dangerous. Who knew, right?
So, I thought, “Okay, I gotta make these myself.” I grabbed a bunch of dog-friendly fruits from my fridge – some apples, bananas, and a bit of watermelon. I figured those would work well together. I avoided the grapes since they are toxic for dogs. I made sure to wash everything really well, just like I do for my own snacks. Then, I chopped them up into small pieces, thinking about the size of my dog’s mouth. No one wants a choking hazard!
Next up, I decided to get creative and freeze them. I just put the pieces in an ice cube tray and popped them into the freezer. I wanted to make it a fun, chewy experience for my dog, especially since it’s getting warmer outside. This took a few hours, but it was super simple. While waiting, I cleaned up the kitchen and played a bit with my pup to get him all excited for the treat.
Once they were frozen solid, it was time for the taste test. I gave one to my dog, and boy, was he curious! He sniffed it for a second, then took a tentative lick, and then – chomp! He loved it! Tail wagging, happy dog dance, the whole nine yards. It was a total success.
A Few Things I Learned
- Check the Fruit: Not all fruits are dog-friendly. I made sure to stick with safe ones like apples, bananas, and watermelon.
- Small Pieces: I cut everything into small, manageable pieces to make it safe and easy for my dog to eat.
- Freezing is Fun: Freezing the fruit made it a longer-lasting and more enjoyable treat, especially for a hot day.
All in all, it was a fun little project, and I felt good about giving my dog a treat that was both delicious and healthy. Plus, it was way cheaper than buying those fancy dog treats from the store. I’ll definitely be making these again. Maybe next time I’ll try blending the fruit into a puree before freezing for a different texture. We’ll see! Woof!
