Alright, let’s talk about these dried meat dog treats, you know, the kind you give your good boy or girl when they’ve been real nice. I ain’t no fancy dog expert or nothin’, but I know what my old Buster likes, and he likes meat, just like the rest of us.

First off, you gotta pick good meat. Don’t go givin’ your dog no scraps or nothin’. I hear some folks say chicken gizzards and hearts are good, but I stick to the good stuff, you know? Like chicken breast or turkey breast. Sometimes I can find that stuff on sale, and that’s when I stock up. Only use the white meat though, the dark meat just don’t seem right for drying.
Now, some folks like to cook it first, and some don’t. Me? I like to cook it a little bit. Just a little boil or somethin’. Gets rid of any nasties, ya know? And then, I cut it up into small pieces, real small. You don’t want your dog chokin’ on a big ol’ chunk of meat.
Then comes the dryin’ part. I ain’t got no fancy dehydrator machine. I just use my oven, low and slow. Put it on the lowest setting, you know? Like when you’re trying to keep somethin’ warm. And you just gotta wait. It takes a long time, sometimes all day. But it’s worth it, seein’ Buster’s tail waggin’ when he gets a piece.
- Make sure the meat is cooked or parboiled to kill any bacteria.
- Cut the meat into small, bite-sized pieces.
- Dehydrate the meat at a low temperature for several hours, until it’s completely dry and hard.
Now, I heard some folks talkin’ about “human grade” dog treats. Sounds fancy, but all it means is it’s good enough for us to eat. Well, I ain’t gonna eat no dog treats, but I guess it means it’s good quality. And that’s what you want for your dog, right? You wouldn’t feed your kids no junk, so don’t feed your dog no junk either.
And there’s all sorts of different kinds of dried meat you can make. Beef, chicken, turkey, you name it. I even heard of folks makin’ dried fish treats. Buster don’t like fish, but I guess some dogs do. It’s all about findin’ what your dog likes.
And don’t forget about the healthy part. These treats ain’t just somethin’ to make your dog happy, they gotta be good for ’em too. Look for treats that are full of flavor and nutrients, you know? Like them folks say, “all natural”. That sounds about right. Keeps your dog healthy and strong, just like they should be. It’s kind of like supportin’ that raw diet, you know, the one them fancy folks talk about.
Some of these dog treats, they use ’em for trainin’. Little bitty pieces, just enough to get your dog’s attention. I ain’t never trained Buster much, he’s just a good boy naturally. But I guess if you got a young pup, them trainin’ treats might be just the ticket.
Anyways, that’s about all I know about dried meat dog treats. It ain’t rocket science, you know? Just good meat, dried slow, and given with love. Your dog will thank you for it, I guarantee it.
One last thing, make sure you store them treats right. You don’t want ’em gettin’ all moldy or nothin’. I keep mine in a jar with a tight lid, keeps ’em fresh and tasty for Buster. And always keep an eye on your dog when they’re eatin’ any kind of treat, just to be safe.
