Hey everyone, so I’ve been wanting to try my hand at something new in the kitchen, and I thought, why not go for some fish-themed cookies? Yeah, you heard that right, fish cookies! I saw some cute ideas online and figured it’d be a fun little project. Plus, who doesn’t love a good themed treat?

First off, I needed to gather my supplies. I already had most of the baking stuff like flour, sugar, and eggs. But I did have to make a quick run to the store for some food coloring and heart-shaped cookie cutters. Turns out, heart-shaped cutters are super popular around Valentine’s Day, but I figured they could be used to make fish shapes too, right? Anyway, got those and some colorful sprinkles because, well, why not?
I started by mixing up a basic sugar cookie dough. Nothing fancy, just your usual butter, sugar, eggs, and flour situation. Once that was all mixed and chilled, I rolled it out and started cutting out the cookies. The heart-shaped cutters worked surprisingly well for the fish bodies! I just had to get a little creative with how I placed them on the baking sheet.
While the cookies were baking, I whipped up some royal icing. This is where the real fun began! I divided the icing into different bowls and started adding food coloring. I went for blues, greens, and even a bit of yellow to make some colorful fish. Getting the right consistency for the icing was a bit tricky, ngl, it took me a couple of tries to get it just right so it wouldn’t be too runny or too thick.
Once the cookies were cooled, I started decorating. I outlined each cookie with a thin line of icing and then flooded the inside. This part took some patience, I won’t lie. Trying to get the icing smooth and even was a bit of a challenge. But hey, practice makes perfect, right?
After the base layer of icing dried, I added some details. I used a darker shade of blue to make some waves and added little dots for eyes. Oh, and I couldn’t resist using those colorful sprinkles I got. They made the cookies look even more fun and festive!
- Mixing the Dough:
- Creamed together butter and sugar.
- Added eggs and vanilla.
- Gradually mixed in the flour.
- Chilled the dough for about 30 minutes.
- Cutting and Baking:
- Rolled out the dough on a floured surface.
- Used heart-shaped cookie cutters to make fish shapes.
- Baked at 350°F for about 10-12 minutes.
- Making the Royal Icing:
- Mixed powdered sugar with meringue powder and water.
- Adjusted consistency with more water or sugar.
- Divided into bowls and added food coloring.
- Decorating the Cookies:
- Outlined each cookie with icing.
- Flooded the inside with a thinner consistency icing.
- Added details like eyes, scales, and sprinkles.
All in all, it was a pretty fun experience. It took a bit longer than I expected, but I’m pretty happy with how the cookies turned out. They’re not perfect, but they’re definitely cute and tasty! And the best part is, they actually look like fish! Who knew heart-shaped cookies could be so versatile?
I’d say if you’re looking for a fun baking project, give these fish-themed cookies a try. They’re great for parties, or just as a fun treat to make with kids. Just be prepared to get a little messy and have a lot of fun with it!
I’ll try to improve my skills and get the icing even smoother. But for a first try, I think I did pretty okay. Life is better under the sea, or at least that’s what they say. And these cookies definitely bring a bit of that underwater fun to life!
