So, last winter, I finally decided to get myself one of those ice castle fish houses. Man, it was a bit of a headache figuring out which one to pick. There are so many options out there! It really came down to what kind of truck I have, how much I was willing to spend, and what kind of fish I was hoping to catch.

After doing a ton of research, I went with an Ice Castle. Seemed like the best bang for my buck, and honestly, they just looked the most comfortable. But let me tell you, just getting the house was only half the battle. Turns out, there’s a whole world of accessories you need to think about.
First things first, the holes. You know, the ones you actually fish through. My ice castle came with these neat covers to keep the cold air out when you’re not using them. But I quickly realized I needed something to keep them from freezing shut. That’s where hole sleeves came in. Lifesavers, those things.
Then there’s the power situation. I had to figure out what kind of battery to use. Did I want a lead-acid one where I had to check the water levels and all that? Or did I want to go with an AGM battery? I ended up going with the AGM. One less thing to worry about.
- Hole Sleeves: These are essential for preventing the ice fishing holes from freezing shut. I can’t even imagine how much of a pain it would be without them!
- Battery: I decided on an AGM battery for my fish house. It’s maintenance-free, which is a big plus for me.
And don’t even get me started on the bait! You’d think picking out bait would be simple, but nope. There are so many different kinds, and you gotta make sure you have the right one for the fish you’re after. I spent a good chunk of time just figuring that part out.
Once I got the basics down, I started looking at some of the fun stuff. My buddy told me about these sofa supports that make a huge difference in comfort. Those are definitely on my list now!.
Now, I know some folks go all out with their ice houses. They add slide-outs, outdoor kitchens, all kinds of fancy stuff. I’m not quite there yet, but who knows, maybe one day. For now, I’m just happy to have a warm place to sit while I’m trying to catch some fish.
One thing I learned is that you gotta be careful about how much weight you’re putting on the ice. My truck can handle a decent amount, but I still make sure there’s at least a foot of good, solid ice before I head out. Last weekend, I was out on about 12-13 inches with my 21-foot Ice Castle, and everything was fine. But it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
All in all, getting into ice fishing with an ice castle has been quite the adventure. There’s a lot more to it than I initially thought, but it’s been a blast figuring it all out. If any of you are thinking about getting one, just be prepared to do your homework and stock up on some essential accessories. It’s worth it, though!
