Okay, so I’ve got this dog, right? A real cutie, but lately, his skin’s been drier than a week-old biscuit. He’s been scratching like crazy, and it’s driving both of us nuts. I tried a bunch of stuff – changed his food, gave him more baths, less baths, you name it. Nothing seemed to really work. So, I started thinking, maybe he just needs some good old-fashioned moisturizer, like we use. But dog skin is different, so I had to do a bit of digging to figure out what’s safe and what’s not.

First, I looked up some ready-made stuff. There’s this spray, PetArmor Anti-Itch Spray, that’s supposed to soothe and heal irritated skin. Sounds good, but I’m always a bit wary of using too much chemical stuff on my pup. Then there’s Dermabliss Anti-Itch Spray, which has hydrocortisone. It might be effective, but I’d rather try something more natural first. I also saw some folks talking about Benadryl, the antihistamine. That’s an option, but I’m not keen on giving him pills unless I really have to.
Then I got to thinking about natural remedies. Coconut oil kept popping up. It’s supposed to be hydrating and good for the skin. I figured, why not? I already use it for myself sometimes. So I warmed up a bit of coconut oil, just a little, and rubbed it gently onto the dry patches on my dog’s skin. He seemed to enjoy the massage, at least! I did this for a few days, and I gotta say, it seemed to help a bit. His skin looked a bit less flaky, and he wasn’t scratching quite as much.
I also saw some folks talking about CBD products for pets. They claim it can help with a bunch of ailments. It seems interesting, but i don’t know much about it, so I decide to skip this method.
Also, I remember there are some shampoos for dog. I used to use it, MiconaHex+Triz shampoo, it worked well for my dog.
- I also tried changing his shampoo to something for sensitive skin. That might have made a difference too.
So, here’s what I’ve learned from this whole dry skin adventure:
- Coconut oil can be a good natural moisturizer for dogs, but don’t overdo it.
- There are commercial sprays available, but I prefer to try natural stuff first.
- Medications are an option, but I’d rather save those as a last resort.
- A good bath with proper shampoo can also help.
A few things to watch out for
- Make sure any product you use is specifically made for dogs. Human products can be harmful.
- If your dog’s skin is really bad, or if he’s in a lot of pain, it’s best to see a vet. There might be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
- Always keep an eye on your dog after trying something new, just in case he has a bad reaction.
Anyway, that’s my experience with trying to moisturize my dog’s dry skin. It’s been a bit of a journey, but I think we’re finally getting somewhere. And hey, if nothing else, he’s getting lots of extra cuddles and massages, and that’s always a good thing!
