Okay, so, I wanted to share my recent journey on getting my dog to behave a bit better. You know how it is, dogs can be a handful sometimes, but they’re family, right? So I decided it was time to firm up some rules around the house.

Starting Out
First things first, I started to look around my place to make sure it was safe for my pup. I read somewhere that it’s super important to “puppy-proof” your house, and let me tell you, it’s not just about avoiding accidents. I moved some stuff around, made sure no wires were just lying around waiting to be chewed on, you get the idea.
Consistency is Key
Then, I realized that I had to be consistent. It’s like with people, you can’t be changing the rules all the time and expect them to follow. So, I made a list of what’s okay and what’s not okay in our house. No more jumping on the couch one day and then getting scolded for it the next.
The Training Begins
- Teaching “Sit”: I started with the “sit” command. It seemed pretty straightforward. I kept my foot on his leash, just enough so he could move a little but not jump. Every time I said “sit” and he did it, he got a treat. It took a few tries, but he started getting it.
- Staying Calm: This was probably the hardest part for me. I had to keep my cool, no matter what. Dogs can sense when you’re getting frustrated, and it just makes things worse. So, I took a lot of deep breaths and tried to keep my energy balanced, like some articles I found online suggested.
- Being Honest with Myself: I had to be real with myself. If I felt like I was losing it, I’d just stop and take a break. No point in getting all worked up, right?
Seeing Results
It took some time, but I started seeing changes. He wasn’t perfect, but he was definitely getting better. Less jumping, more listening. It was such a good feeling to see him responding well. And honestly, it felt good for me too, knowing I could handle it.
Wrapping Up
So, that’s my story on firming up my dog’s behavior. It wasn’t always easy, and there were definitely times I wanted to give up. But sticking with it, being consistent, and just keeping calm made a huge difference. We’re both happier now, and our home feels a lot more peaceful. Plus, I learned a lot about patience and staying positive through it all. It’s a win-win, I’d say.
If any of you are going through something similar with your furry friends, just remember to stay patient and consistent. It really does pay off in the end.
